1566 Days

It was about 6:15pm looking west while I let my dog out. It had been dark for about an hour. I noticed a light almost directly above me tracking north to south. I live in the city and have never seen a satellite here with all of the light pullution but it kinda reminded me of one. Looked to be very high in altitude compared to the blinking lights from the nearby commercial aircraft cruising over.

The light was solid and white with no blinking and about the same luminosity as some of the brighter stars in the light polluted sky. It tracked south and started to lose some luminosity the further south it got. As the light became weaker it took on a red/orange hue and eventually became soo weak I lost it. Thats not really noteworthy on its own.

I watched the area for about 30 seconds and I see the faint red/orange light return but now heading the opposite way, south to north. The color changed to white as it got closer overhead and then as it tracked further north it went red/orange again and eventually got to hard to see. I waited around for 5 minutes and didn't see the light again. There was plenty of air traffic for me to compare it to and it looked much higher and was a solid light as opposed to blinking.

Could it have been solar panels reflecting light from a satellite? Are there satellites that take a north/south orbit? If not could it have been some meteors or space trash reflecting? The sun had only been down for an hour. The only really odd thing was the direction of travel and the apparent change of direction, although that could have just been an object of similar type travelling the other way.

Any ideas?
